Attacking republicans in congress. and showing an unwillingness to reach across the aisle. and frankly, you can t get things done in a bipartisan nature where you have three branches of government, unless all three branches are willing to work with each other. and this president has not shown that inclination, frankly since he has been in office. the government shutdown, the debt limit issue, these are real concerns that will affect a lot of people. and the president has got to engage and work in the job of governing, not just campaigning and posturing but governing and working with people that agree with him and disagree with him. what do you think of the president s decision, no negotiation on either the debt ceiling or the government shutdown? none, zero. what do you think of that? well, i don t think the american people can understand how the person who is to lead the country would possibly take a position saying i m not ....

Deficit being reduced. we ve got to do more. no mistake about it. but you don t do it you don t do it this way, withholding a gun to your head on the debt limit issue, or with the continuing resolution. all right. from the senate finance committee, john tester from montana, good to have you on the ed show tonight. thank you, sir, appreciate it. i want to bring in former virginia congressman, tom periel periello, center for american progress fund. one question tonight. liberal groups in this country right now that want to see the democrats hold the line, what role do they play in keeping the president strong right now? i actually think the president is holding strong, but only strong after already conceding the budget points to the republicans. so i think it s important for progressive groups to make clear and moderate groups to make clear, this should not be a game. we should have a clean cr. we should have a clean raising of the deficit ceiling. and get this thing done with. ....

Vote. i m talking to sources within speaker boehner s office and they say the typing is now different and here s why. we are so close to the debt limit issue which is coming up on october 17th, that s the last date where the treasury department says that the government can continue to borrow and pay its bills and so forth. and because democrats have also insisting that that be raised without anything else attached to it, that that changes the dynamics. so some of those republicans who have said publicly that they would support a vote today to reopen the government might not do that given the fact the democrats are saying they would not deal when it comes to the debt ceiling. so that s complicated, i know. but that s the nature of public statements versus actual votes. so we don t really know. now, speaker boehner is in a position where he doesn t want to bring that vote and have it not pass or bring that vote and have its pa and then weaken his position for the debt ceiling. so bringin ....

Those things, the sequester, it s all the same story. it s broken government. it s no way to govern. you can t just make across the board spending cuts and leave yourself no flexibility to respond to situations. no one in the private sector would run a company that way. the fact we re running a government that way, that was a big clue right there that we have broken government and now we re seeing and even more floored manifestation of it. really quick exit question to you, sam. do we wind up with one big ominous negotiation that throws the debt limit, sequestration and cr all into one? is that your prediction? it s one possible outcome. you re starting to see more members mention that because the shutdown is happening, because there s very little sense of a resolution down the road. they might just tie everything together with the debt limit issue. but, you know, if you look at it, i don t see how the two sides get together on that issue, too, if the conditions are we re going to ....
