Just as Japan saw a substantial increase in foreign residents in 2022, it also registered a decline in its native population of approximately 800,000 people, marking the biggest drop on the country’s record. What the figures say: The data, released by the Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry on Wednesday, was based on residency registrations as of January 1 this year. According to the report, the local population has dropped by 0.65%, leaving the total number of Japanese nationals at 122.4 million for the year 2022.
