Essentially air traffic control and they ll say, hey here s what s going on and then air traffic control reports it and makes a determination about whether that plane should land. if a pilot calls and says, hey, the plane is losing pressure because of something wrong with the door, how does that then become well, nothing happened to the door? does that make sense? there s a pretty wide kas many between the explanations? it doesn t make any sense at all. let s face it the crew would know that they are having a decompression problem in the cockpit. they ll get an indication that there s pressurization has dramatically changed to the point where they need to get the airplane down. they are going to call an emergency and let the air traffic control now they need to make a descent and land as soon as possible. if you clear to the nearest ....

Other guest said it is just as easy to make a radio control as to set the transponder. so that doesn t i don t think that means anything. pilots trained if you have a decompression problem to put on your oxygen mask the first thing you do then you start a rapid descent, you re required to descend to an altitude where no one needs oxygen in four minutes. this took eight minutes. to clyde s point, this terrain and the circumstances that the pilot would have been facing? he would have turned from the terrain and made a rapid descent, that s not what happened. clive, thank you very much and tom, both of your expertise and insight on this. we ll be right back with new details coming in to msnbc regarding the crash site and the latest information on those who are believed to be on board. ....

This in his spare time. we do that on a regular basis as part of our job. doing that on your spare time is very telling, very professional. is the simulator good for that kind of practice? that s what a simulator is for. if i said sudden decompression, something like that? let s do it. go ahead. set us up. tell us what happens. all right. we re at decompression, the airplane, we got a warning saying there s decompression problem. rapid or otherwise. we re basically going to try to get down as low as we can where the air is thicker and breathe without the oxygen masks. we would have put masks on. everything as per the checklist, in a real flight deck, this is briefed beforehand, before the flight, of course. we all know our duties. we re basically getting down to below 10,000 feet where we don t need the mask to breathe and finish off the checklist, talk to air traffic control and get to a safe landing. the idea is to practice this over and over with a simulator to whe ....

Thanks, barbara starr. let s look at the other side. the possibility that maybe there wasn t a villain, be it a potential hijacker but it was one horrific accident. joe johns, you ve been looking into that for us. what is it about the flight path and behavior that tells investigators that it could be accidental as opposed to intentional. jim, this goes into the category of things that can t be ruled out as long as a black box is not recovered. a sudden change in direction suggests that something went wrong on the plane very rapidly. if that s true, the plane dropped altitude rapidly, that could have been because of a sudden decompression problem which could be explained by any breach, a big fire, explosion, even an open door. with this scenario, there could have only been seconds to react before passing out. the pilots would have been trying to get the plane to an altitude where the people on ....
