Some defense support agencies missed the deadline to complete migrating workloads to the Defense Department’s on-premise, cloud-based infrastructure services offering, according to a Defense Information Systems Agency official.
Per a 2018 memo, Defense agencies and DOD field activities, known as the DAFAs, were required to migrate all workloads to milCloud 2.0 by the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2020. John Hale, DISA’s Cloud Portfolio office chief, told
Nextgov in an email some DAFAs were granted extensions from the DOD chief information office to complete migrations and that DISA is continuing to work with these agencies on migration. While DISA declined to provide details regarding why extensions were needed and which components received extensions, Hale said the number of workloads migrating to milCloud 2.0 continues to grow as a suite of changes comes to the platform.

On paper, GD brings back together its two tech segments -- Washington Technology

By Ross Wilkers
Jan 27, 2021
General Dynamics has consolidated its IT services and mission systems segment into a single line of business called “Technologies” but that is strictly for financial reporting purposes, according to executives.
For longtime watchers of GD, this is something of a back to the future to the years when the company would report those units together as “Information Systems and Technology” before starting to detail the numbers separately nearly three years ago.
So why bring them together again? During GD’s fourth quarter earnings call Wednesday, CEO Phebe Novakovic said they already have been in some respects.

DISA pushes bring your own approved devices -- Defense Systems

By Lauren C. Williams
Jan 20, 2021
Thanks to the changes brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing your own approved device (BYOAD) is now a high priority for the Defense Information Systems Agency.
That's due in large part to vastly more teleworkers and the temporary deployment of the Defense Department's commercial virtual remote (CVR) Teams environment. As DOD and DISA move to a permanent Microsoft Office 365 solution this summer, the need and demand for BYOAD is expected to increase.
"With the rollout of CVR and the success of CVR users and the fact that users are working differently with CVR, it is driving us more quickly to BYOAD," Steve Wallace, the systems innovation specialist for DISA's Emerging Technologies Directorate, said during a Jan. 14 AFCEA DC virtual event.

Telework, BYOD and DEOS -- FCW

Telework made the idea of bringing your own device a top priority as the Defense Information Systems Agency begins transitioning to a permanent version of the commercial virtual remote environment.

DISA takes on DOD cloud operations -- Defense Systems

By Lauren C. Williams
Jan 13, 2021
The Defense Information Systems Agency will be absorbing the Defense Department’s Cloud Computing Program Office (CCPO) by the end of January, the agency's director said.
DISA will become “the implementation arm for the DOD CIO’s cloud strategy,” said Vice Adm. Nancy Norton, DISA director and commander of the Joint Force Headquarters Department of Defense Information Network.
"Whether that's a general-purpose cloud or a fit-for-purpose cloud, all of those offerings are available through DISA," Norton said during a virtual keynote presentation with AFCEA NOVA on Jan. 7.
Control of the CCPO, which is responsible for the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure program and other cloud efforts, has been under split with DISA having administrative control and the DOD CIO having operational control.

After bid protests and litigation, some of the largest cloud contracts the government has attempted can get underway.
Despite a pandemic that forced hundreds of thousands of personnel to remote offices and an assortment of legal actions involving some of the major cloud procurements, the Pentagon and intelligence community made major moves in cloud computing adoption in 2020.
However, 2020 ends much the same way it began for the Defense Department’s Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure: under litigation. With JEDI on hold for more than a year, Defense agencies have looked elsewhere for enterprise cloud computing capabilities, turning instead to existing vehicles like the Air Force’s Cloud One contract. Here’s a look at what happened with some of the Defense Department’s and intelligence community’s cloud efforts.
