The Miami Dolphins named former Baltimore Ravens assistant head coach and defensive line coach Anthony Weaver as their defensive coordinator on Saturday. Weaver had previously interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons and Washington Commanders for their head coaching vacancies before joining the Dolphins, where he will reunite with his former coaching colleague Mike McDaniel.
Weaver will be Miami’s third defensive coordinator in as many years.
Steve Wilks has had a roller coaster ride in his first season as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Faced with a tricky task of taking over a successful defense that still had the same position coaches and system of his predecessor DeMeco Ryans, Wilks tried to add his own twists without ruining what had worked so well in the past. There were good moments such as a dominating five-game start to the season and bad ones such as a three-game losing streak in October that led to Wilks moving from the coaching booth to the sideline.
Frazier is the third candidate who has surfaced for the Dolphins’ opening that has taken a job elsewhere.
Weaver has spent the last three seasons in Baltimore, working as an assistant head coach and defensive line coach.
