Ainât nobody got time for that, right? Welcome to the reality of modern day computing. The electronic computing devices we use every day are, in fact, cheap mass-produced highly flawed consumer-grade experiments in functionality, connected to billions of similar devices using another imperfect technology called the Internet. Dude, Get a Security Update for Your Dell PC Share Filed to:alienware Do you still own tech from 2009 or thereabouts? Maybe an old CPU or motherboard that’s sitting in a box in your closet “just in case” you need a backup? What about a Dell? If you or someone you care about happens to still be using a Dell computer produced any time between when Barack Obama started his first term and now, you should check to make sure you don’t need an important security update that just dropped. It was originally discovered by researchers from Sentinel Labs who found that attackers could exploit these vulnerabilities to locally escalate to kernel-mode privileges. Since 2009, Dell has released hundreds of millions of Windows devices worldwide which contain the vulnerable driver. The findings, which were proactively reported to Dell on 1 December 2020, essentially found that the vulnerabilities would allow attackers to bypass security products, although the researchers haven’t seen any evidence of this weakness being exploited. The Dell XPS 13 and 15 range of laptops, the Vostro 759...

The vulnerability was found by security firm Sentinel Labs and while no evidence of this vulnerability being exploited has been found, a fix is still needed. The vulnerability exists in the ‘dbutil_2_3.sys’ driver and would have been installed on Dell PCs via a firmware update through one of Dell’s applications, such as Dell Command Update o...
