Masked third-graders work on computers at Tibbals Elementary School in Murphy in December. Tibbals is in the Wylie school district which appears to have not announced any specific COVID-19 protocols for the coming school year.
Many schools are still working out the details about how they’re going to keep students, faculty and staff safe amid rising coronavirus case numbers and hospitalizations.
On top of that, schools cannot require students are faculty to wear masks, per an order issued by Gov. Greg Abbott last month.

North Texas School Districts Respond to End of Statewide Mask Mandate

North Texas school districts are responding after Gov. Greg Abbott ended the statewide mask mandate, effective next Wednesday.
Many of the districts said they are awaiting guidance from the Texas Education Agency.

That group tweeted out Tuesday afternoon that updated guidance will be coming this week.

TEA Says School Boards Have 'Full Authority' to Set Local Mask Policy – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth


Steven Poole, executive director of the teachers union United Educators Association, said he believed districts would keep their mask mandates in place.
I don t see any of our districts doing that especially with the guidance from the Texas Education Agency that masks are required. It would take a lot to overturn that guidance from TEA, Poole said.
Dallas superintendent Michael Hinojosa said he planned to keep the current policy in place and believed he had the full support of the school board.
But he also said he feared the TEA s advice that school boards can now change the policy might open a controversial debate. ....

My wife and I had our first COVID-19 vaccine shots Tuesday morning in Denton County, and I cannot sing the praises of Denton County Health Services loudly or frequently enough.
DCHS has devised a process that was efficient and seamless in execution. We were in and out in a maximum of 30 minutes (including the 15-minute observation period) and never had to leave our vehicle! Seeing photos of long lines of at-risk individuals standing out in the cold and rain in potential superspreader events at other vaccine hubs is quite troubling. ....
