A partnership between Florida Polytechnic University and Centro Universitário Facens in Brazil has produced a project intended to relieve traffic congestion in the Brazilian city of Sorocaba.
Diego de Paula, who recently completed his master’s degree in computer science, worked throughout the spring semester to provide data visualization of 49 traffic sensors in Sorocaba, Florida Poly said in a news release. The sensors are typically used for traffic enforcement of speeders and red-light runners, but they also capture a great deal of additional information. ....

Florida Polytechnic student's project aids Brazilian traffic managers

The sensors allow the user to see the traffic at any point, giving traffic managers information to improve congestion issues and more effectively manage slowdowns caused by crashes and other incidents. Previously, traffic managers only had access to data from three sensors.
De Paula, an international student from Brazil, completed his studies remotely in his home country during the COVID-19 pandemic. He worked with an interdisciplinary team that included individuals from both Facens and Grupo Splice.
Reinaldo Sanchez-Arias, an assistant professor of data science and business analytics at Florida Poly, served as de Paula’s graduate advisor. Shahram Taj, chair of the Department of Data Science and Business Analytics, was also an advising member of de Paula’s graduate project committee. ....
