QC Covid-19 cases jump by 20% in 2 days

Quezon City Covid-19 update as of Tuesday, June 21, 2022 (Photo courtesy of QC Government Facebook) MANILA - Quezon City has recorded a 20-percent increase in active Covid-19 cases in two days. From 365 active infections on Sunday, QC's tally jumped to 439 on Tuesday, or 0.17 percent of the overall confirmed cases of 263,118. Fatalities have remained at 1,732 since June 14. In a statement, the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit reminded anew about adherence to minimum health protocols like avoiding crowded places, maintaining one to two-meter physical distancing, frequent use of alcohol or washing of hands, and wearing of face masks. As the city is under "yellow" status, which means a surge may happen in the next two weeks, Mayor Joy Belmonte has ordered all 142 villages to strictly implement the order to wear masks, with assistance from the Department of Public Order and Safety and Task Force Disiplina (Discipline). On Monday, the Department of Health said the daily average of Covid-19 cases went up by 82 percent from June 13 to 19. From 340 per day from June 6 to 12, the number rose to 436 daily from June 13 to 19. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, however, assured there is no surge yet. Dr. Guido David of the OCTA Research Group also tweeted on Tuesday that the seven-day average in the National Capital Region increased from 131 the previous week to 225 on June 14 to 20. Hospital occupancy remained low at 22 percent. "Expecting 500 to 1, 000 cases per day by end of June and possibly 1k to 2k by first week of July. I am expecting the peak to happen around that time. Let us all be careful and practice health protocols," David tweeted. Villages still compliant Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said villages continue to be compliant with health protocols, especially with the national government's mask mandate. In a Laging Handa briefing Tuesday, DILG Undersecretary for Barangay Affairs Martin Dino said no villages have so far expressed desire to make the wearing of face masks optional. "Our barangays are obedient because they know that the suffering has been going on for more than two years. Just imagine, their efforts will be wasted -- the villages will be on lockdown and all must stay at home. Only those who were issued with a quarantine pass can go out. We don't want to go into that situation anymore, so we need to open up the economy," Dino added. Dino also assured the continuity of the government's Covid-19 vaccination program, especially in the barangays and other areas with low inoculation rates. He said they are now concentrating on convincing the public to get their booster shots after completing their primary Covid-19 vaccines to further protect them against the virus. "Actually, may order kami na tingnan ang lahat nang hindi pa nagpabakuna and at the same time engganyuhin sila na magpabakuna (we received orders to look for the unvaccinated individuals and convince them to get the vaccine),'' he added. He also supported the call to permit only the entry of individuals with Covid-19 booster shots inside air-conditioned rooms. This is aside from the numerous incentives provided by the different local government units to entice more people to get Covid-19 jabs.(with Lloyd Caliwan/PNA) }

QC goes tough on face mask use as Covid-19 cases rise

(Photo courtesy of QC Government Facebook) MANILA - Officials of Quezon City's 142 villages have been ordered to strictly implement the wearing of face masks as the local government retained "yellow" status under its monitoring system due to the continued rise in Covid-19 cases. Face masks must be worn at all times in indoor and outdoor settings, the city government ordered on Friday. The Department of Public Order and Safety and Task Force Disiplina (Discipline) will help village officials in enforcing the use of face masks. In his report, City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit chief Rolando Cruz said that as of Thursday, there are 286 active cases, up from 240 two days earlier. "Our monitoring tells us that the rate of infection is not slowing down. We hope to bring the cases down again before we reach the red status where we can assume community transmission," he said. Cruz said three other indicators have reached the threshold -- average daily attack, 1.10 percent; average positivity rate, 3.4 percent from 1.8 on June 11; and forecasted reproduction number, 2.5 percent from 1.12 last week. "Yellow" status is declared in the city when cases increase from the previous week and when three of four indicators have increased from normal to above normal. There is also the possibility of a surge within the next 14 days When cases continue to rise and all other indicators remain high or have breached the indicated threshold, there is a surge and "red" status is implemented. "Aside from the implementation of prevention strategies, now is also the critical time for barangays and all relevant city departments to ramp up preparedness and response actions such as the stocking up on personal protective equipment and re-opening of isolation facilities," Cruz said. In another statement also on Friday, Mayor Joy Belmonte encouraged residents who are still unvaccinated, have not completed their primary shots or have no booster shots yet to avail of the free jabs. The QC Task Force Vax to Normal data as of June 11 showed that only 887,630 of the 2.4 million who are fully vaccinated have the first booster shot while 47,538 health care workers, senior citizens, and immunocompromised adults have second booster shots. "We cannot strictly enforce social distancing because we have just recently reopened our economies, so we are appealing to everyone to mask up and get vaccinated or boosted instead," Belmonte said. (PNA Photo by Joseph Razon) MANILA - The local governments of Manila and Quezon City have started the operations to remove the election campaign materials used during the May 9 polls. During his Facebook live update on Wednesday, Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso said he ordered the Department of Public Service (DPS) to clear the streets and other areas of campaign materials to prevent them from ending in riverways and esteros. "I have ordered, and thanks to DPS Director Kenneth Amurao and City Engineering office at City Electrician Office, na kung saan tanggalin na ang mga naiwang paraphernalia ng mga kandidato sa poste, sa pader, sa bakod, sa mga commercial area, at mga kawad ng kuryente (to clear the paraphernalia left by the candidates in electric posts, walls, commercial areas, and power lines)," Domagoso said. He also called on private individuals who may be having a hard time cleaning their areas to seek assistance from the city government. Domagoso, who already conceded his defeat in the presidential race, said the city government will immediately respond to their requests. Barangay officials are also encouraged to cooperate and clear their respective areas, he added. Quezon City reelected Mayor Joy Belmonte has also directed the Department of Sanitation and Cleanup Works of Quezon City (DSQC) in cooperation with the city's 142 barangays to conduct a massive clean-up drive. "This is meant to ensure that election paraphernalia will be disposed of properly and not clog the city's waterways. Kailangan nating masiguro na mabilis at maingat nating maililigpit ang mga campaign paraphernalia at hindi maging sanhi ng anumang problema sa ating lungsod (We need to ensure that these campaign paraphernalia are immediately taken away and not cause further problem in the city)," Belmonte said. The DSQS and the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS), she said, have already collected tons of election campaign materials along Maginhawa Street and the nearby Barangay Teachers Village. Meanwhile, reusable materials are temporarily kept at the barangay Commonwealth material recovery facility for possible recycling. She also urged individual candidates to voluntarily remove their campaign posters to keep the city clean. (PNA) }
