Researchers at the University of Leeds are developing a 'nowcasting' system to get accurate, short-range weather forecasts of extreme weather to socially disadvantaged communities in South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique.
Scientists have been awarded £2 million to develop ways of alerting communities in South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique to extreme weather. The project, involving researchers at the University and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science, will develop ways of getting accurate, short-range weather forecasts - a process known as nowcasting - to socially disadvantaged communities who are more likely to be impacted by extreme weather.
