Israel s police commissioner asked the attorney general to see to the formation of an external panel, headed by a judge, to examine the incident last week in which 45 people were crushed to death while celebrating the Lag Ba’omer festival at Mount Meron in northern Israel.
Police commissioner Yaakov Shabtai made the request Monday after asking to speak with Avichai Mendelblit ahead of a meeting of police commanders. People close to Shabtai say that he requested an “inquiry committee,” but Mendelblit’s associates say the police chief specified a “state commission of inquiry,” whose powers are much broader. ....

Blame game begins after Meron disaster
State Comptroller Office deputy director general: The main problem is that no single organization is responsible for the site.
The blame game has begun after 45 people attending Lag Ba Omer festivities on Mount Meron were crushed to death in a stampede in the early hours of Friday morning. This was Israel s worst ever civilian disaster, slightly exceeding the previous most deadly event, when 44 people perished in the Carmel Forest fire in 2010.
With fingers being pointed at the police, religious authorities, government ministries and politicians, State Comptroller Office deputy director general Liora Shimoni said, The main problem is that there is no single organization that manages the site on behalf of the government. ....
