Lake Jocassee is a 75,000-acre reservoir outside of Salem, South Carolina and is considered the jewel of the Appalachian Mountains. The name Jocassee means “Place of the Lost One” and comes from a Cherokee legend about a maiden of that name. Before there was a lake here the area was called the Jocassee Valley.
