Between the fast-growing New Hanover and Brunswick counties, and two local rivers, is the 3,000-plus acre Eagles Island. With development pressure increasing throughout the region, some local groups hope to set aside this stretch of land as a park – and place for residents to learn more about the area s history. It’s an idea that’s been around for a while, said Roger Shew, an earth sciences lecturer at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Over the years, proponents formed the Eagles Island Coalition and a number of local officials and nonprofits have been part of the evolving discussion. Now, momentum is growing. There’s a new Eagles Island Central Park Task Force, and accompanying social media presence.
