Jeff Rankin: Before automatic washers, steam laundries relieved drudgery By Jeff Rankin The Rankin File Throughout much of the 19th century, most laundry was done by hand in a laborious process that often stretched over three days. Some cities offered commercial laundries, but the work was still done by hand, often by Chinese immigrants who toiled long working days for minimal wages. The invention of the steam laundry began to change all that. Steam laundries did not clean with steam. Rather, they made use of a boiler and a steam engine to power the machinery. The boiler also created hot water for the laundry and steam for a commercial press that eliminated the need to use hand irons heated on a stove, which could scorch clothing. ....

Former Turners Falls High School football coach Donald Russell died on Feb. 2 in Plano, Texas, at the age of 93. He was born in Quincy and graduated from Bates College in 1951 where he was a two-way tackle for coach Raymond “Duckie” Pond. Russell taught for a few years in Maine at Hollis High School and Thornton Academy in Saco, but football was in his blood and he came to the Powertown in 1955 to teach and coach at TFHS. “It’s been so long,” said Stash Koscinski, “but I liked him. The coaches were always friendly with us.” ....

Broadcasters want to work and fans want to listen but most schools won’t allow visiting media into their rinks and UMass hockey analyst Brock Hines and play-by-play partner Donnie Moorhouse have adjusted accordingly. “Every week, the deck of cards gets thrown on the floor and we see where we’ll be going,” said Hines. The season was slated to begin at Maine three weeks ago, but visiting media wouldn’t be allowed in Alfond Arena and so, said Hines, “I was going to go down to Donnie’s, plug the broadcasting unit into the TV and we’d call the game from a raw video feed. From here to Westfield beats from here to Orono, but then the game was canceled.” ....
