HTC has unveiled the new Vive Pro 2, an update to its high-end virtual reality headset that adds a host of small but worthwhile improvements.
The biggest change is the new display, which now offers 5K resolution (or 2448 × 2448 pixels per eye), 120Hz refresh rate, and a 120-degree field of view. That’s a decent step up from the original Vive Pro, released in 2018, which had a 2880 x 1600 resolution, 90Hz refresh rate, and 110-degree field of view. The new Vive Pro 2 also supports Display Stream Compression, or DSC, a first in a VR headset. DSC is a visually lossless standard most frequently seen in high-end monitors. ....

Vive Pro 2: HTC announces 5K, 120Hz headset

The headset-only version of the Vive Pro 2 is available for pre-order from 6pm BST on 11 May, with a special discount during the pre-order period that brings the price to £659. Beyond this, the full-kit Vive Pro 2, which comes with Base Station 2.0 and Vive controllers, will be available from 4 June, costing £1,299.
HTC’s enterprise line has also had an update in the shape of the Vive Focus 3. Much like the Pro 2, this headset will have 5K resolution split across two 2.5K eye displays, as well as a 120-degree field of view, although the refresh rate is lower at 90Hz.
Powered by a custom Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 platform and angled towards the workplace, the Vive Focus 3 looks to have a more adaptable and lightweight design than the Pro 2. It has a swappable battery pack, a magnesium alloy frame and removable magnetic front and rear face gaskets, for switching out and wiping down parts if the headset is being passed around by multiple users. It will go on sale from 24 Ju ....

Eyetracking doesn’t usually work very well. And OLEDs would only be worth it if full RGB. 2.5k x 2.5k is impressive.

Subpixel counts at this resolutions are not really very important anymore. Anything over the old Vive Pro will already be great, not as good as the Pro 2, fillrate is going to be top of the class there, but I’m not prepared to play games where the darkness of a cave is dark grey (being generous) just yet, not for any fillrate in the world.

It doesn’t work, give us some proof ? Nvidia seems to think the opposite with their lab examples. ....

At its ViveCon 2021 virtual event today, HTC unveiled two new virtual reality headsets. The new VR kits are aimed at separate markets, with the HTC Vive Pro 2 heading to PC VR consumers while the standalone HTC Vive Focus 3 is targetting business purposes.
The gaming-orientated Vive Pro 2 touts vast improvements over its predecessor from 2018, coming with a 5K resolution (2448 pixels per eye), 120-degree FOV display running at 120hz, as well as fast-switching RGB sub-pixels for almost eliminating the annoying screen door effect and motion blur.
HTC is also including an IPD (inter-pupillary distance) slider, an adjustable head strap, a resizing dial, and promising a balanced headset for maximum comfort. The built-in headphones are Hi-Res Audio certified, and third-party headphones are supported as well. The headset is also backward co ....

Let’s talk first on HTC’s latest stand alone headset. The
VIVE Focus 3 is the successor to their VIVE Focus Plus and offers up some nice improvements. The HMD features two LCD screens at 2448x2448 pixels giving you a total resolution of 4896x2448. These screens are capable of running at 90Hz, which is a nice improvement over the 60Hz in the previous generation.
Something that I think should be in all headsets, the Focus 3 has a nice wide range to adjust the IPD so various face shapes should be easily accommodated. It can go from 52mm all the way up to 72mm and various stages in between. ....
