Earlier, the top court had granted time till January 31 to the speaker to decide the disqualification pleas pertaining to the NCP MLAs who had switched sides to be part of the Eknath Shinde-led state government. A plea was filed by Jayant Patil of the Sharad Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party for a direction to the speaker to expeditiously decide the disqualification petitions against Ajit Pawar and MLAs loyal to him.

Maharashtra assembly speaker Rahul Narwekar said that he would need to put in extra hours to hear disqualification pleas while ensuring smooth functioning

Narwekar also slammed Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray over his comments on violating anti-defection laws, stating that it is the Speaker who will decide whether there has been a violation of the anti-defection law and not Aaditya Thackeray.

​As regards the disqualification petitions pertaining to NCP MLAs, the court asked the Speaker to decide the same by January 31. The directions were passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. Before setting out the deadlines, the SC held that it had "repeatedly furnished opportunities" to the Speaker to decide the disqualification pleas "expeditiously". The CJI verbally observed that the "sanctity of the 10th Schedule" needs "to be maintained", otherwise everything will be "thrown to the wind".
