Wigton man pushed himself to the limit with wheelchair challenge

IT took 58 days of pushing himself to his limits... .
But Wigton man Charles Deans has now achieved his personal wheelchair challenge, covering 874 miles in 10 weeks - a distance equivalent to a road trip from John O’ Groats to Land’s End.
His gruelling fundraiser is part of Charles’s incredible fightback from disability - and his chance to help two good local causes while honouring the memory of his late sister Helen Deans, 43, who died last year from pancreatic cancer.
His wheelchair oddyssey - on roads across north Cumbria - has raised £10,500 for The Lake District based Calvert Trust and Eden Valley Hospice, whose staff cared for his sister.

One man's inspiring journey through pain to better times

IT was a magical moment...
Sitting silently in his wheelchair at the summit of Dodd Fell, Charles Deans gazed at a spectacular Lakeland landscape, the pale winter sunlight illuminating distant peaks as mist filled Bassenthwaite Valley below.
The 46-year-old had every right to feel proud.
“My wife, Sara, took the photo,” says Charles, from Wigton. “I was just sitting there, enjoying the moment. It was perfect.”
In many ways, conquering Dodd Fell on December 30 last year was the perfect metaphor for the past 14 years of this man’s life — a period of relentless struggle against pain and disability.
A former builder and landscape gardener, he had worked six days a week, though he always enjoyed walks in the country with Sara and their daughters. “I didn’t have a lot of spare time, but loved mountain biking,” he says.
