“It’s all Nancy Naeve’s fault,” Eric Meeter joked regarding his new Grand Avenue endeavor, working alongside his father Greg, mother Lorelei and wife Kristen. Eric, who sits on the Spencer MainStreet Spencer Board, attended a meeting where Naeve indicated Don Hemphill might be looking to sell his downtown office location as well as other properties which were damaged during the January 2023 fire. It started the wheel’s turning.

The Spencer City Council gave city employees permission on Nov. 20 to demolish a house that has fallen into disrepair. The house in question is located at 302 W. 12th St. in Spencer. City officials say the building has not been adequately maintained and has become a danger to the community. “This was not a close question,” Spencer City Attorney Don Hemphill said.

The city of Spencer has a hearing before the Clay County Magistrate next week regarding a contempt citation. The citation, which stems from persistent odor from an egg processing plant in the city’s Industrial Park, will be heard on Oct. 12. According to City Attorney Don Hemphill, the magistrate ordered the facility to abate the odor, but it has failed to do so.
