Powell, Ross Repeat as Super Bowl Champions

CLEMSON, S.C. — Former Clemson receivers Cornell Powell and Justyn Ross each earned their second Super Bowl championship ring in the last two seasons on Sunday evening, as their Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, SCORE, in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. In all, five former Tigers were under contract with Super Bowl LVIII participants, including three members of the 49ers: defensive end Austin Bryant, defensive end Clelin Ferrell and receiver/returner Ray-Ray McCloud. Ross and McCloud both appeared in the contest, becoming the 46th and 47th Clemson players ever to play at least one snap in a Super Bowl. With the victory by the Chiefs, Clemson has had at least one player on the roster of the eventual Super Bowl champions in each of the last six seasons. Clemson's six-year streak with a Super Bowl champion is the second-longest streak in the nation behind Michigan (10). IOWA DROPPED OFF HERE. The 2023 NFL season marked the eighth consecutive year in which a former Clemson player was under contract with a Super Bowl participant, including players on active rosters, practice squads and reserve lists. Clemson is one of only 10 programs to produce a member of a Super Bowl roster in each of the last seven years, a group that also includes Georgia, LSU, Florida State, Washington, NC State, Michigan, Oklahoma, Auburn and Florida. He finished his college career with 93 receptions for 1,211 yards and 10 touchdown catches in 1,207 snaps over 54 career games (12 starts) after a career year in 2020 that resulted in All-ACC recognition. The Chiefs signed Ross as an undrafted free agent in May 2022 and he spent his rookie season on the Chiefs’ Reserve/Injured list following surgery in July to repair a foot injury. He made his NFL debut this season, appearing in 10 regular season games with one start for the Chiefs and catching six passes for 53 yards. He was inactive in Kansas City's Wild Card win against Miami but played in each of the Chiefs' final three postseason contests. Ross’ Clemson career spanned the 2018-21 seasons, including sitting out a 2020 campaign with a career-threatening medical issue. He recorded 158 receptions for 2,379 yards with 20 touchdowns in 1,400 snaps over 39 career games (24 starts), finishing his career tied for fifth in Clemson history in career receiving touchdowns, 10th in career receiving yards and 11th in career receptions. Last year, Powell and Ross joined Tremayne Anchrum Jr., Dan Benish, K.D. Dunn, Andy Headen, Terry Kinard, Dorian O’Daniel and William Perry among Clemson players to earn both a national championship ring and a Super Bowl ring. Powell and Ross now join Charlie Waters, Bennie Cunningham, Dwight Clark, Jim Stuckey, Jeff Bostic, Terrence Flagler and Trevor Pryce as the only former Clemson players to earn multiple Super Bowl rings.

2023 Clemson Football Award Roundup

CLEMSON, S.C. — Linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. and a talented freshman class headlined Clemson’s bevy of honors during the 2023 college football award season. Trotter earned several first- and second-team All-America nods to become Clemson’s first multi-time All-American at linebacker since Keith Adams in 1999-2000, while five different Clemson freshman garnered at least one Freshman All-America selection. Trotter, a 2022 second-team AP All-American, garnered first-team All-America honors from both ESPN and Sports Illustrated among others in addition to a bevy of second-team selections for his performance in 2023. He was a finalist for the Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker, joining Isaiah Simmons (2019), Tre Lamar (2018), Dorian O’Daniel (2017), Keith Adams (2000) and Levon Kirkland (1990) as one of six Butkus finalists in school history. Trotter declared for the 2024 NFL Draft after compiling a team-high 88 tackles, a team-best 15.0 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, six pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two interceptions (including one he returned 28 yards for a touchdown) in 676 snaps over 12 games (all starts) this season. True freshmen defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods were among a number of Clemson freshmen who accrued Freshman All-America honors from a variety of presenting organizations. Parker earned Freshman All-American status from 247Sports, ESPN, The Athletic and others and was a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Semifinalist as is 11.0 tackles for loss this season placed him one shy of Myles Murphy’s true freshman school record. Woods earned Freshman All-America honors from 247Sports, College Football News and On3 and was named as College Football Network’s Freshman Interior Defender of the Year for his interior presence for Clemson’s seventh-ranked total defense. True freshman safety Khalil Barnes’ impact campaign was recognized with Freshman All-America nods from On3, 247Sports, The Athletic and College Football News. Barnes’ nose for the ball made him the first Clemson freshman in the Dabo Swinney era to record multiple forced fumbles and multiple interceptions in a freshman season and the first Clemson player of any classification to reach those marks and record a sack in a season since Bashaud Breeland in 2013. In his most recent game, Barnes became the first Clemson player with a takeaway on consecutive plays from scrimmage since eventual Pro Football Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins against Duke in 1995. True freshman wide receiver Tyler Brown and redshirt freshman Robert Gunn III also earned Freshman All-American status, with Brown collecting honors from ESPN while Gunn was named as a Freshman All-American as a kickoff specialist by College Football Network. Gunn enters bowl season ranked third in the nation in kickoff average (64.57 yards per kick) and fifth in touchback percentage (84.62), and Brown’s 51 receptions placed him alongside Antonio Williams (56 in 2022), Artavis Scott (76 in 2014), Sammy Watkins (82 in 2011) and DeAndre Hopkins (52 in 2010) as one of five Clemson freshmen since 2010 to record 50-plus catches in their debut campaigns. On Nov. 28, the Atlantic Coast Conference recognized Clemson with eight selections to its annual All-ACC Team. Tyler Davis became the fifth four-time All-ACC honoree in Clemson history, and Will Putnam earned a repeat selection after earning All-ACC honors a year ago. Trotter, Nate Wiggins, Barrett Carter, Jake Briningstool, Blake Miller and Ruke Orhorohoro were all first-time selections. Trotter Named as Butkus Award Finalist

CLEMSON, S.C. — The Butkus Foundation announced Tuesday that Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. has been named as a finalist for the 2023 Butkus Award, presented annually to the nation’s top linebacker. Trotter is one of five finalists, alongside Missouri’s Ty’Ron Hopper, Washington’s Edefuan Ulofoshio, Mississippi State’s Nathaniel Watson and NC State’s Payton Wilson. Trotter joins Isaiah Simmons (2019), Tre Lamar (2018), Dorian O’Daniel (2017), Keith Adams (2000) and Levon Kirkland (1990) as one of six Butkus finalists in school history. If Trotter were to win the award, he would become the second player in school history to collect the honor, joining Simmons’ victory from 2019. Trotter has started all 11 games for Clemson this season and has started each of Clemson’s last 25 games since the start of the 2022 season. This year, Clemson’s coaches have credited him with a team-high 82 tackles in addition to leading the Tigers in tackles for loss (14.5) and sacks (5.5). He is also tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (two) and interceptions (two, including one returned for a touchdown), and his six pass breakups rank third. He is the only player in America to have recorded at least 14 tackles for loss, at least five sacks, multiple interceptions, multiple forced fumbles and a pick-six this season. Trotter, a second-team All-America selection by the Associated Press a season ago, is the leader of Clemson’s 10th-ranked total defense and is the only finalist that has led a Top 20 defensive unit nationally. Trotter and his teammates presently rank fifth in the nation in first downs allowed per game (14.6). In addition to being a Butkus Award finalist, Trotter is a Bednarik Award semifinalist and a prime candidate for All-America and All-ACC honors.

Trotter Earns Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week

DALLAS (FWAA) – Clemson linebacker Jeremiah Trotter Jr. was all over the field making tackles, but was noticeably present in the Notre Dame backfield as he keyed the Tigers’ 31-23 upset over No. 12 Notre Dame. For his game-high 11 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks and a pick-six, Trotter earned the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week honor for games during the weekend of Nov. 4, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America. Each week during the regular season, the FWAA has selected a Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week since 2001. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce finalists for the 2023 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 15. The national defensive player of the year will be chosen from those finalists who are part of the 2023 FWAA All-America Team and presented with the trophy at the Bronko Nagurski Awards Banquet on Dec. 4 at the Charlotte Convention Center. Players may be added or removed from the Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list during the season. If not already on the watch list each week’s honored player will be added at that time. Trotter was already on the preseason watch list along with teammates and fellow linebacker Barrett Carter and defensive tackle Tyler Davis. Trotter, a 6-0 junior from Hainesport, N.J., becomes only the fifth FBS player since 2005 to post defensive stats with double-digit tackles, at least 2.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 or more sacks and have a pick-six in a single game, per the Clemson staff. Trotter spearheaded a Clemson defense that held the nation's 12th-ranked scoring offense to nearly 100 yards below its season average. His interception came with a 28-yard return for a touchdown. It was the second pick-six of his career, one of many Clemson career marks Trotter is adding his name to this season. The 2.0 sacks were his first multi-sack game of the season and third of his career. He is the first Clemson linebacker in Dabo Swinney’s tenure to record three career games with 2.0 or more sacks. Trotter earned his first Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week award of this season and the third of his career following the Notre Dame win. He is also the first Clemson linebacker to record multiple interception returns for a touchdown in a career since Dorian O’Daniel (two from 2014-17). Clemson held Notre Dame to 146 passing yards and has now held five straight foes to fewer than 200 passing yards for the first time since a 10-game streak in 2019. Clemson is well represented recently with the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and has had one winner, defensive end Da’Quan Bowers, in the award’s past. Clemson had a run of finalists last decade with linebacker Isaiah Simmons (2019), defensive tackle Christian Wilkins (2018 and 2016) and defensive end Shaq Lawson (2015). Defensive end Gaines Adams was a finalist in 2006. Simmons was the latest of only three Clemson linebackers to ever earn FWAA All-America status. Defensive tackle Tyler Davis was a second-team member on last year’s All-America team and the only Clemson defender to earn the honor this decade. The Tigers host Georgia Tech at Noon ET Saturday broadcast on ABC. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association’s full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Nagurski Trophy finalists. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner will be chosen from the five finalists named in November. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football. The FWAA has chosen a National Defensive Player of the Year since 1993. In 1995, the FWAA named the award in honor of the legendary two-way player from the University of Minnesota. Nagurski dominated college football, then became a star for professional football’s Chicago Bears in the 1930s. Bronislaw Bronko Nagurski is a charter member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA includes college football’s most prestigious awards and its 24 awards have honored more than 900 recipients dating back to 1935. This season, 12 NCFAA awards will honor national players of the week each Tuesday.
