Man slapped 8 years jail sentence for impregnating niece – Face of Malawi

Dowa First Grade Magistrate Court has sentenced 26-year-old Katiwell Chazama to 8 years imprisonment for raping and impregnating his 16-year-old niece.
Police Prosecutor Christopher Daluni told the court that the convict committed the offence on October 20, 2020 at Mandala Village in the district.
According to Daluni, the convict pleaded guilty to the offence.
Medical results from Dowa District Hospital confirmed that the girl was indeed raped.
Passing sentence, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri sentenced the convict to 8 years imprisonment to send a warning to would-be offenders.
Chazama hails from Mandala Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa.

12 People Fined For Floating Covid-19 Rules In Dowa

The Dowa First Grade Magistrate’s Court has convicted and sentenced twelve people to pay fines of K7000.00 and K50 000.00 each or in default serve one month and two months imprisonment with hard labour respectively for contravening Covid-19 rules and regulations.
The court through state prosecutor Sergeant Joseph Banda heard that the convicts were arrested on the night of February 25, 2021 at Dowa Turn Off and Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa District.
The court further heard that the convicts were arrested when police officers were on Covid-19 patrol whereby eight were arrested people were arrested for not putting on face masks while four others were arrested for operating business outside permitted hours. ....

47 year old woman Triza Katukumala has paid K350, 000 fine for trafficking forest products without a license.
The Dowa First Grade Magistrate Court convicted and fined Katukumala K350,000 or in default serve 10 months imprisonment with hard labour.
The court through state prosecutor Sub-Inspector Ezara Bakili heard that the convict, Triza Katukumala, from Malikha village TA Mazengera in Lilongwe was found in possession of 200 bags of charcoal early this month in Kongwe Forest Reserve and police intercepted the vehicle she was using on her way to Lilongwe.
In his ruling, First Grade Magistrate Amran Phiri said the offence is serious and fined her K350 000.00 or in default serve 10 months imprisonment with hard labour. ....
