Elmira girl, 7, starts trash clean up initiative

'Kids who are cleaning up the world, one piece of garbage at a time’ is the motto of The Garbage Club, founded by 7-year-old Hope Tupling of Elmira.
“We started the first day by picking up garbage around our own house with my little sister," she said.
Then her neighbours, 9-year-old Rachel and 7-year-old Oliva Lidster, eagerly hoped on board and joined the crew.
“It helps the earth,” said Oliva, “When I do it, it makes me happy because it's like I actually am helping the earth.”
“When you do pick up garbage, it helps the earth a lot,’ said her sister Rachel. “It needs to be more than just us, it needs to be a lot more people.”

Easter Sunday church services adjust to 15 per cent capacity lockdown rule

Easter Sunday church services in Ontario looked a little different during 2021 due to the 15 per cent capacity lockdown restriction.
Forward Church’s service in Cambridge looked more like a concert, with the goal of keeping it upbeat on the important day.
“I like to call it our main event of the year,” said co-lead pastor Kirk Giles.
While the new rules are limiting for attendance, many church members say they’re just happy to congregate in any way.
“Normally we’re watching on a screen when we’re in lockdown,” said Nancy Halloran. “To be able to congregate together and to hear it live is always a better place to be.”

Cambridge girl wins big at Augusta National golf competition

KITCHENER --
Alexis Card of Cambridge has made her mark in the golf world.
Card won the Drive, Chip, and Putt Competition for girls aged 7-9 at Augusta National in Augusta, Georgia on Sunday.
“It went really well, I was really excited when I found out that I won. I put a lot of hard work into it and it was just really exciting to know it paid off,” said Card.
The competition is an initiative created by the Masters.
Those participating in the event qualified 18 months ago, but had to wait to compete after the 2020 version was postponed.
“Just to be here in the first place was an experience in itself, and everything else was a bonus. Just being out here watching all the kids compete was fun and exciting and to see Alexis come out on top was the cherry on top, it was pretty special,” said Aaron Card, Alexis’s dad.

Driver in stolen vehicle involved in nine collisions, charged with uttering threats: police

KITCHENER --
Waterloo regional police say a man has been charged after a stolen vehicle he was driving was involved in nine collisions over the weekend.
According to a news release, police responded to complaints of a man driving erratically on Saturday afternoon, while carrying a weapon and uttering threats.
Police said the driver was operating a stolen vehicle and was involved in nine separate collisions throughout Waterloo Region. Six of the collisions involved police vehicles.
During the incident, the man stopped and threatened numerous victims while armed with a knife.
Police located and arrested the driver in the area of Madison Avenue South in Kitchener, after his vehicle became stuck on the CN Rail tracks.

Riding lawnmowers, tools stolen from Guelph church

KITCHENER --
Guelph police are investigating after several items were stolen from a north-end church last week.
In a news release, officials said that officers were called to a church near Woodlawn Road West and Elmira Road North around 2 p.m. Friday.
They said a maintenance volunteer had arrived on scene to find that a large shed had been broken into.
Security footage revealed a black pickup truck had attended the property late on the night of March 28.
The occupant of the truck dumped some garbage into the church’s dumpster and then left, coming back a short time later to break the lock off the shed.

Local pharmacies administer first doses of AstraZeneca vaccine

CAMBRIDGE --
A pharmacy in Cambridge administered its first doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Monday.
Last week, the province expanded its COVID-19 vaccine distribution plan to another 350 pharmacies, including locations in Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph.
Appointments are available to people over the age of 55.
The Shoppers Drug Mart on Dundas Street in Cambridge gave out its first dose on Monday around 9 a.m.
Pharmacists there plan to administer 40 doses on Monday. That will increase throughout the week, with 60 appointments booked on Tuesday and 70 on Wednesday. Eventually, they plan to offer more than 200 appointments a day.
"I registered and it was so easy," said Kim Hopper after receiving the vaccine. "Couldn't sleep last night, I woke up at 4 and filled out all my questions."

Local hospitals prepare for potential increase in ICU patients as provincial admissions reach all-time high

KITCHENER --
Hospital officials in Waterloo Region are keeping a close eye on ICU admissions as the number of patients in Ontario reached an all-time high Monday.
"It's a troubling picture," St. Mary's General Hospital President Lee Fairclough said.
"We typically see a rise in our own admissions in a pattern of about two weeks after what we start seeing in the GTA."
According to Fairclough, 12 per cent of the people in the ICU at St. Mary's have tested positive for COVID-19. Patients who tested postiive for a variant of concern are two times as likely to end up in the ICU and 1.5 times more likely to die from the disease, according to Fairclough.
