DP's bid for State House now gets noisy, messier

Braving hostile crowds in Isiolo yesterday, Deputy President William Ruto was this weekend crossing into the toughest week yet as pressure continued to pile on him.
Having hit the road earlier than anyone else, expending energy and resources for political mobilisation, swimming against the tide and concentrating his activities in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard, Ruto’s years of political exploits are facing an acid test.
On Friday, President Kenyatta dared Ruto to quit the government if he was uncomfortable with it, accusing him of undermining his own government.

Ruto's former lawyer Khan now in charge at ICC

THE STANDARD

Lawyer Karim Khan, the fast-talking Queen’s Counsel lawyer who represented Deputy President William Ruto in the International Criminal Court (ICC), is the new court’s prosecutor.
Given to verbose and dropping phrases, Khan was elected by Assembly of State Parties for a nine-year term, replacing Gambian Fatou Bensouda. The court’s first prosecutor was Louis Moreno Ocampo who initiated the Kenyan cases.
His position now puts him at the centre of a raging storm with regard to the situation of lawyer Paul Gicheru, who surrendered to the court, and who had been accused of witness interference by his predecessor. Gicheru’s witness interference case relates to Khan’s former client, Ruto.

NAIROBI, KENYA: County Governments will be allocated an additional Sh53.5 billion in the 2021/2022 financial year, the Intergovernmental Budget and Economic Council chaired by Deputy President William Ruto has agreed today.

The new development means the devolved units will get an accumulated amount of Sh409.88 billion in the period under consideration.
The figure comprises an equitable share of Sh370 billion, conditional allocations from the share of National Government revenue of Sh7.53 billion, and conditional allocations from proceeds of loans and grants by development partners of Sh32.34 billion.

The gloves are off in the political battle of wits between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, who yesterday scoffed at his boss’s claim that he was in a hurry to clinch power.
The DP also dismissed claims made by President Kenyatta and his allies that he was disloyal, radicalising leaders and youth in the country to revolt against the government and the so-called dynasties.
In his second day tour of Coast, the DP cut an image of a person betrayed by Uhuru, who he said he fought for twice to win power. He declared he will not stop his march to State House.

Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has announced plans for road construction in the county.
Speaking at Mugurin in Mogotio, Gideon said a budget for the construction of Kamukunji-Kisanana-Kipkitur-Mugurin-Lake Bogoria road has been approved.
Addressing local residents after attending Sunday service at the African Inland Church Mugurin, the Kanu chairman assured residents that the contractor will soon be on site.
The senator was responding to residents who asked him to intervene and ensure the road, which has stalled over the last three years, is completed. They also asked him to help address the water shortage in the area.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo on Thursday opined on the Hustler vs Dynasty narrative saying it will lead to class wars.
Speaking during an interview on a local TV station, the legislator stated that the propagator, Deputy President William Ruto, easily fits among the rich.
“The leader of Hustler (Ruto) has benefitted from the people he calls dynasties throughout.
“If you examine closely, there is nothing that is hustler about DP William Ruto. He fits completely within the so-called dynasty,” he said.

Last Tuesday, Deputy President William Ruto exuded confidence in his strategy to eclipse governor Hassan Ali Joho
(pictured) and ODM dominance in Mombasa.
In a meeting with Nyali MP Mohamed Ali and former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar in Karen, Nairobi, Dr Ruto said his team was focused on "transforming Mombasa".
"Impressed by the insightful brief on behalf of our Mombasa Team on the progress and prospects of the county strategy and advancement planning for various engagement," said Ruto.
Since 2017, Ruto has made several forays to the Coast. The visits appear to have gained traction with several ODM MPs now supporting his presidential ambitions.

Ruto's survival tactic nothing new to Kenya's politics

THE STANDARD

The shift by former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto to his fierce critic William Ruto's camp on Friday marked the heightened re-alignment linked to the fight for political survival as the 2022 General Election nears.
Friday's move by Isaac, a point man of the BBI campaigns in Rift Valley region, is reminiscent of past elections where top leaders sought refuge in parties perceived to be dominant in their regions to make a return to mainstream politics.
The former governor, in his speech, made no secret of the fact that he was making a strategic move to preserve his political ambition even though he said it was informed by a desire "to unite the Kalenjin community".
