Heavy vs light rail: MP argues Coast can't have both


Sunshine Coast MPs have warned a $2.6 billion light rail system between Maroochydore and Kawana could ruin chances of having heavy rail from Brisbane to the region.
Kawana MP Jarrod Bleijie and other Sunshine Coast MPs have called on the Sunshine Coast Council to prioritise heavy rail before throwing its support behind an expensive local public transport network.
The council has released a comprehensive report into several mass transit options costing between $881 million to $2.6 billion to connect Maroochydore and Kawana.
Residents have eight weeks to have their say on the draft options analysis report, including on what their preferred public transport would be. ....

A comprehensive report on mass transit options gave light rail a perfect score when considering the best way to get people out of cars and into public transport.
Sunshine Coast Council last week released its 316-page draft options analysis report for a mass transit plan which centres around five key options ranging from costs of $881m to $2.6bn.
Mayor Mark Jamieson said the council was open to all options with the ultimate aim to bust congestion, reduce emissions and improve public transport.
Mr Jamieson said there was a misconception that light rail was the only option council was considering. ....

Decade of documents reveals evolution of light rail plans


Reports compiled over more than a decade show the evolution of a controversial public transport proposal currently up for community comment.
Sunshine Coast Council s mass transit plans have been in the works for more than a decade with several iterations of the proposal published in a series of reports and documents that have led to this point - an eight-week public consultation period to help direct a final report for the council.
Pending consideration the final Options Analysis report could be sent to the state government which will be responsible for the detailed business case process dictating future funding and timelines of the project. ....

Public transport use will have to grow by almost 7 per cent each year for a quarter of a century if Sunshine Coast Council is to achieve its target of 10 per cent of trips being taken on public transport by 2041.
The report revealed the rate of usage of public transport in the region had fallen by 2 per cent over the past decade, leaving an ambitious growth rate of 6.6 per cent a year required to reach Sunshine Coast Council s goal of 10 per cent mode share for public transport in 20 years time.
The draft report recommended Stage 1 of the Sunshine Coast Mass Transit system, a 13.6km stretch from Maroochydore to Birtinya, be operational by 2027 with construction to start in 2024. ....

The weather bureau has predicted showers and a possible thunderstorm for the Coast today. Between 10 to 30mm of rain is expected and the wet weather is expected to stick around this weekend. Maleny will reach a top of 20C while a majority of the region reaches 23-24C.
