It is going to be a close contest between the ruling AIADMK alliance and the opposition DMK alliance in the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, going by the early trends announced by the Election Commission of India on Sunday. According to the Election Commission, the ruling AIADMK is leading in 35 constituencies while its allies BJP is leading in 3 and PMK in 5 seats. On the other hand, the DMK is leading in 38 seats and its two left allies and VCK are leading in one seat each, while Congress is leading in 3 constituencies. The initial trends seem to be contrary to the various opinion surveys and exit polls that said DMK would sweep the elections in the state. ....
Senior officials of the Election Commission on Sunday held a review meeting with the expenditure observers of the poll-bound Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry, according to sources. As per sources, Special Expenditure Observers and officials from the State Election Commission of the respective states were also present. While polling for 30 Assembly seats in Puducherry will be held on April 6. As many as 10,02,589 electors will choose the candidates for the Legislative Assembly of Puducherry. In Tamil Nadu, the 234-members assembly will go to elections in a single phase on April 6. As many as 6,28,23,749 electors will choose candidates for the sixteenth legislative assembly in the state. ....
This was announced by Vijayakanth in a press statement here on Tuesday. While the DMDK was pitching for 23 seats to contest, the AIADMK was not willing to part with more than 15 seats. Three rounds of discussions were held between the DMDK leadership and AIADMK-BJP combine but could not end the impasse. and hence the DMDK has quit from the alliance. The DMDK deputy general secretary and Vijayakanth s brother-in-law L.K. Sudhish while speaking to IANS said, AIADMK has stabbed us in the back. Even as the two major Tamil Nadu political parties are working out their seat sharing maths for the April 6 assembly elections, they are also in the process of finalising their poll promises that would attract the voters. The election is crucial both for the ruling AIADMK led by Chief Minister K. Palaniswami and the opposition DMK led by M.K. Stalin and their manifestoes are going to be very populist with lots of freebies thrown in, said political analysts. The AIADMK government recently announced a loan waiver for farmers, loans against ornaments taken by the poor and farm labourers, loans to women self help groups (SHG), reservation for Vanniars, 24-hour three phased power for agriculture, all pass for students of 9, 10 and 11 classes and others. ....
