DMK govt will work to get 'official' tag Eighth Schedule languages: Stalin


The DMK government would work
towards getting all the languages including Tamil, listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, the status of the official language of the union government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said here on Sunday.
Recalling that on this day in 2004, the Centre announced that Tamil would be declared a classical language following the continued efforts of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Stalin said his party-led government would continue to work to embellish the Tamil language more and more.
A notification was issued on October 12, 2004 by the union government giving Tamil the classical language status. ....

BJP-led NDA retains power with majority 75 seats in Assam, Congress wins 29


The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance secured a comfortable majority in Assam Assembly elections paving its way to form the government in the state winning 75 seats of the total 126 constituencies.
As per the Election Commission, the BJP secured 60 seats, about 33.2 per cent of the total vote share, while allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People s Party, Liberal (UPPL) bagged nine and six seats respectively.
The counting of votes, which began at 8 am on Sunday, ended at around 5:40 am on Monday.
Congress managed to secure 29 seats (29.7 per cent vote share) while its Mahajoth allies AIUDF won 16, and Bodoland People s Front bagged four. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) secured one seat. ....

Assembly polls result: Early trends show AIADMK and DMK in close race in TN


It is going to be a close contest between the ruling AIADMK alliance and the opposition DMK alliance in the 2021 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, going by the early trends announced by the Election Commission of India on Sunday.
According to the Election Commission, the ruling AIADMK is leading in 35 constituencies while its allies BJP is leading in 3 and PMK in 5 seats.
On the other hand, the DMK is leading in 38 seats and its two left allies and VCK are leading in one seat each, while Congress is leading in 3 constituencies.
The initial trends seem to be contrary to the various opinion surveys and exit polls that said DMK would sweep the elections in the state. ....

Tamil Nadu Assembly elections: Congress hopes high, expects 18 seats


The Congress, which is relegated to a junior partner in the DMK-led front, is expecting to get a minimum of 15 seats and a maximum of 18 in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections to be held on April 6.
The polls to elect 234 new members of the Tamil Nadu Assembly will be held in a single phase on April 6 and the counting of votes will be done on May 2.
Although there were initial hiccups in the Congress-DMK alliance, even as the former wanted to contest, but the chemistry between them improved later in the run-up to the elections.
