Power because the u.n. and other countries have said you do this by force, we won t recognize you, you re a pariah state. so the taliban are hoping they can that stay on outskirts of kabul and pull off this so-called peaceful transfer of power, really a peaceful coup. arthel: does the extraction, because you mentioned, you know, the airport, you ve got allies at the airport trying to strategize as well. does this extraction and drawdown debacle diminish trust from u.s. allies? well, it raises a lot of questions. so absolutely have to get this last piece of it right. now, the u.s. has forces that are really good at going in and extracting. but to move out a lot of people, they want to be able to still use commercial transport whenever possible, so they re going to have to try to figure out, first of all, what is really still functioning in kabul and what isn t to get that ....

Administration officials expected it to. and there are going to be questions in the coming days, in the coming months, in the coming years about the conduct in which the biden administration went forth with this drawdown. obviously we knew biden was going to get u.s. troops out, but how this went down, how misorderly it appears right now, there are going to be questions about that. now, we should also note that just as recently as last week, biden administration officials were talking with taliban officials. and so there are going to be questions about that too because the taliban are the ones who have taken over the country now. we are seeing these historic, shocking images of the taliban in the presidential palace. and so we are going to be asking the state department in the coming days about what the u.s. relationship with the taliban is going to look like going forth. it s an important question. kylie atwood, thank you so much. president biden says this is now ....

American troops to head to kabul to help with the drawdown of u.s. personnel and also to help evacuate those afghan allies who helped the u.s. military so much over the course of the past 20 years and in the statement the president said that they have sent a specific message to the taliban that if they were to take any actions on the ground that would put u.s. personnel at risk, that there would be a strong and swift military response from the united states. so that is something to keep in mind as we are seeing the situation in kabul develop. but the president also issued a sle firm defense of his decision to withdraw american troops from afghanistan by the end of the month. i want to read you a bit of what the president said. he said, when i particularly pinned part of the blame saying he was hamstrung by president trump saying when i came to office i inherited a deal cut by my predecessor which he invited the taliban to discuss at camp ....

Sources tell cnn that president ashraf gone any has fled his country, and in desperation, long lines of afghan citizens are trying to withdraw cash from atms and, if they can, trying to seek flights out of the country. as all of this unfolds, the u.s. is sending more u.s. troops into afghanistan, 5,000 total, to ensure that president biden calls an orderly and safe drawdown. when the president came to office, he had a decision to make. the previous administration negotiated an agreement with the taliban that said that our forces, our remaining forces, only about 2,500, would be out of the country on may 1st. the idea that the status quo could have been maintained by keeping our forces there i think is simply wrong. we have team coverage on the ground in afghanistan and across the globe to bring you all the breaking developments. cnn s nick paton walsh is in ....

Existed. we kept hoping beyond reality, quite frankly, that we could prop them up and become sustainable. i think it became apparent to president trump, president obama and president biden. all three tried to withdraw, biden is the one finally pulling the plug. each of those three presidents knew it was time until the taliban came into power in one form or another. it s taken all these years to really finally tear the band aid off so to speak. so what do you think is going to happen now that we are sending additional troops to the region? granted their mission is to facilitate the drawdown. how do you see that going? i presume we are not expecting them to get pulled into an open arm conflict unless the taliban attack? you know, i think things are happening so quickly and rapidly in afghanistan, anybody who can pediatric what s going to happen ....
