As fatal drug overdoses rise, relaxed buprenorphine regulations bring hope to addiction treatment providers


Almost two decades ago, Jennifer Michaels became the first person in Berkshire County to prescribe buprenorphine.
Those early prescriptions saved lives, said Michaels, who serves as medical director of The Brien Center, but they came with stigma attached.
“It was a bizarre dichotomy,” Michaels said. “On the one hand, I was treating patients who had struggled for months or years with potentially fatal heroin addictions and, once stabilized on Suboxone, were able to go on with their lives. On the other hand, I was being criticized, shamed and ostracized by some of my colleagues in the field for practicing this evidence-based treatment.” ....

Texas residents 18 and older with moderate to severe opioid use disorder for at least 12 months in a row. Your financial eligibility is based on your income and expenses, and you may need to pay for some services.
Buprenorphine
Buprenorphine is used in medication-assisted treatment and office-based opioid treatment services to help people reduce or quit their use of heroin or other opiates, such as pain relievers. Buprenorphine helps control withdrawal symptoms and blocks cravings.
Who Is Eligible for Buprenorphine?
Anyone who has been diagnosed with opioid dependency. Buprenorphine is prescribed or dispensed in a physician’s office. Physicians can offer buprenorphine if they have a Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 waiver. ....

This exemption has been placed on hold by the Biden administration and may require legislative change to implement.
