HALIFAX An iconic lighthouse standing at the mouth of Nova Scotia’s Halifax Harbour is at risk of going silent forever. The Chebucto Head lighthouse has been sounding the alarm for sailors and fishermen for more than 100 years, but its foghorn went silent in February and has not yet been deemed necessary to repair. At this time there are no plans to reactivate the fog signal, said Harvey Vardy, regional director of Atlantic Navigational Programs at the Canadian Coast Guard. The lighthouse was first lit in 1872 and, until February, its foghorn guided ships from their journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The lighthouse is also a well-known landmark among locals and visitors along the Duncans Cove hiking trail. ....
Thomas E. Grove Thomas Emerson Grove was born March 25,1930, in Williamsport and passed away peacefully on April 19, 2021 in his home in Duncans Cove, Nova Scotia. He discovered his passion for music at a young age playing clarinet and saxophone before settling on the bassoon and contrabassoon. Tom graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Indiana State University in 1953. He furthered his love of bassoon by studying at Julliard before winning the bassoon position in the Halifax Symphonette. His extensive career included performing with Arthur Fiedler’s Boston Pops Tour Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, Milwaukee Symphony, Florida Symphony, Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and the Charlottetown Festival Orchestra, to name a few. ....
