Colorado communities have transformed schools into welfare agencies as tens of thousands of children of illegal immigrants enroll.

Hundreds of migrant children, many fresh from crossing the southern border, have registered to attend Denver schools since last summer, numbers that continue to grow week after week, boosting enrollment in Colorado’s largest school district and — at least temporarily — reversing a years-long decline in students.

Denver has identified 15 schools with very low enrollment. Some board members who previously opposed school closures say the situation has become unsustainable.

The Denver school board heard hours of testimony against school closure. They are scheduled for vote Thursday on school closure decisions.

Families whose Denver schools may be closed have peppered school district officials with questions — but received few answers.
