Athens Commission pushes back against state elections law

The Athens-Clarke County Commission unanimously passed a resolution to ensure future voter access in the county in retaliation to Georgiaâs new voting law in a Tuesday night voting meeting.
The resolution states that County Manager Blaine Williams will develop a plan of action with the Board of Elections to âmitigate the impactâ of Senate Bill 202 on ACC residents. SB 202 passed in the Georgia General Assembly on March 25, placing new restrictions on absentee voting and allowing state officials to take over local elections boards.
The resolution states that the countyâs plan of action may include implementing a voter information campaign ahead of the 2022 election to make voting resources more accessible, maximizing the number of absentee ballot dropboxes and maximizing early voting locations across the county.

UGArden talks impact on Athens community

UGArden is a University of Georgia organization that teaches college students how to farm and harvest sustainably while providing fresh produce to organizations that eliminate local food insecurity like Grow It Know It and Campus Kitchen.
According to the UGA Engage page, the farm is about four acres, and it produces vegetables, fruits, shiitake mushrooms and an assortment of medicinal herbs. Although the farm isnât large by commercial standards, itâs a fitting size to teach students farming basics while still providing extra food for the community.

Sierra King, a senior entomology major, is one of the 10 interns who helps run UGArden this semester. Throughout the week, King is on the farm harvesting, weeding or doing any other general farm work. But for King, working as an intern has been beneficial beyond just learning new skills.
