ST PAUL — Over 1 million more lunches have been served monthly by the free school meals program this year, saving families thousands of dollars.
There is such a thing as a free lunch, at least for students at Minnesota schools. And the new universal free school meals program has led to schools serving 2.2 million more this September than the year before. But the lunches do come at a cost to taxpayers, and it's rising.
The Walz administration says 1.1 million more breakfasts and 1.1 million more lunches have been served compared to the same time last year.
Voters have until Oct. 3 to return ballots to Kalispell Public Schools that will decide the fate of technology and levy issues for its elementary and high school districts, which operate on separate budgets.
