Plans have been submitted to reinstate a hotel at 36 Buttermarket in Bury St Edmunds. - Credit: Google Maps Plans have been submitted for a 30-bedroom hotel in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, where two shops currently stand. The plans would reinstate a hotel at 36 Buttermarket, which is currently occupied by one of two Waterstones book shops in the town and the recently closed Edinburgh Woollen Mill. The site is Grade II listed and was formerly home to the Suffolk Hotel. In the planning statement submitted to West Suffolk Council, developers Gatsby Retail Limited, say that despite Waterstones taking up some of the site, the majority of it is currently vacant. ....

CHESTER city centre had more business openings than closures in 2020 – in spite of the coronavirus pandemic. The city s retail scene is also taking on a new look, with more independent retailers, venues and eateries taking the place of chain stores and restaurants. While the city was not immune from the devastating economic effects of the ongoing pandemic – which even now sees all non-essential retailers forced to keep their doors closed during lockdown – Chester BID has revealed how the high street is changing. The business improvement district has now launched an Independent Business Guide in response to the dramatic change in the city’s retail and hospitality sector – and in their continued battle to save the high street during and post-pandemic. ....
In the retailer s Christmas trading update, released this morning, clothing and home sales were down 25.1% year on year to £787m in the 13 weeks to 26 December, hit by a 46.5% plunge in store sales. M&S said this was partially offset by strong online sales growth of 47.5% to £353m in the period. Total UK sales were down 8.2% to £2.5bn. Speaking after this morning s results, Rowe said bringing in third-party brands is a small part of M&S s retail strategy: “We said at the half year [results] that M&S wanted to build a curated set of brands and merchandise, largely through our online business, but also to fill in some of that excess space we have in stores. ....
