Members of the 15,000-member union that represents custodians, cafeteria workers, aides, and other employees at the Los Angeles Unified School District voted to go on strike after negotiations hit an impasse.
The affected employees, most of whom earn an average salary of 25,000 a year, have been working without a contract since June 2020. The first mediation session is scheduled for February 21.
An overwhelming majority of the Los Angeles Unified School District's more than 30,000 cafeteria workers, bus drivers, custodians, special education assistants and other essential school workers have voted to authorize a strike if necessary to resolve stalled contract negotiations.
