Education centers in Afghanistan closed amid surge in COVID-19 cases

(Last Updated On: May 29, 2021) The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) of Afghanistan on Saturday announced that schools and universities in 16 provinces will remain closed for two weeks to contain the spread of the third wave of COVID-19. The Ministry said that public and private schools, universities, and training centers will remain closed in Kabul, Ghazni, Helmand, Kandahar, Logar, Nangarhar, Paktia, Parwan, Maidan Wardak, Panjshir, Balkh, Laghman, Badakhshan, Kapisa, Kunduz, and Nimroz provinces. This comes as 20 people have died of the coronavirus in the last 24 hours in the country, the Ministry stated. According to the Ministry’s daily statistics, 654 new infections have been recorded during this period.

Acting Minister Rejected by Parliament Fires 11 Advisers Some of the advisers fired from their jobs by the acting Minister of Education Rangina Hamidi on Thursday said that they were terminated without any reason given. They said that Rangina Hamidi has appointed her close aides in their place. The suspended advisers said that the Education Ministry also plans to fire another 1,400 employees in the near future. Legal experts have said that an acting minister does not have the legal authority to reshuffle or fire someone from the jobs. The fired advisers said that they were informed of the decision by the notification letters sent to them.
