Human rights advocate, Femi Falana, SAN, has approached the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos State to seek an order compelling the Nigerian government to make basic education freely accessible in the country.  SaharaReporters learnt that Falana and his co-plaintiff/applicant Hauwa Mustapha filed the suit marked FHC/L/CS/142/2024, for themselves and on behalf of the Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 and Beyond.

Despite the country’s growing crisis in the education sector resulting in about 20 million children out-of-school, about 29 states have failed to access N68.73 billion Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) matching grant to boost primary education in 2023.

We requested UBEC to furnish us with information on access toits UBEC fund by the 36 state governments and the Federal Capital Territory.

The Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 and Beyond (ASCAB), a civic group led by human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has given the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) till January 15, 2024, to access the over N68 billion matching grants from the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) or face legal action.   The group also asked the states and the FCT to register all the estimated 20.2 million out-of-school children in school and urged UBEC to disburse the counterpart funds directly to the state governments and the FCT.  

For 18 years, federating states and the federal capital territory of Nigeria, failed to access a whopping N68,737,873,073.52 billion education grant, set
