Zhang Yiming, co-founder of Chinese tech giant ByteDance, parent company of TikTok, announced Wednesday that he is stepping down as the company’s CEO.
In a memo to employees published online, Zhang said his decision stems in part from the fact that “I lack some of the skills that make an ideal manager. I’m more interested in analyzing organizational and market principles, and leveraging these theories to further reduce management work, rather than actually managing people. Similarly, I’m not very social, preferring solitary activities like being online, reading, listening to music, and daydreaming about what may be possible.” ....

ByteDance CEO is stepping down, admits lacking managerial skills
Founder of TikTok and CEO at ByteDance Zhang Yiming has announced in a memo to employees he is stepping down from his role, admitting he lacks “some of the skills that make an ideal manager.”
His successor will be Liang Rubo, ByteDance co-founder and HR head, and the two men will be working together for the next six months to ensure a smooth transition.

Yiming revealed he was thinking for several months about the idea of stepping down and moving away from the day-to-day responsibilities. Eventually, in March he discussed the idea and suggested Rubo take over as CEO. According to the memo, he will be better with his “strengths in management, organization, and social engagement”. ....

Zhang Yiming, the mysterious and youthful ByteDance founder who has been the focus of intense media hype in the US, is stepping down from his role atop the Chinese owner of TikTok and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin. Zhang broke the news of his departure in a letter to ByteDance s employees posted on the company s website.
Zhang s co-founder and head of human resources Liang Rubo will take over and lead the company through its expected IPO. It s unclear whether Zhang will continue on in his role as chairman of the company s board.

According to Zhang, Liang has taken on numerous critical roles at ByteDance at different times, including head of research and development (R&D), Lark and Efficiency Engineering, and most recently, Human Resources and Management.
“Now, for the long-term development of the company, Zhang needs to get out of the daily management and focus on the work that is not urgent but important to the development of the company, so as to create more possibilities. Therefore, I will take over his responsibilities as CEO. It s a big challenge for me and there s a lot of pressure,” said Liang in an internal letter on Thursda ....
