battle to the compound of moammar gadhafi, pushing inside and knocking over statues of the long-time libyan leader. making off with weapons but finding no sign of him or his family. the reuters news agency reports that gadhafi has been heard on a local radio station. now according to reuters in his radio address gadhafi says his withdrawal from the compound was a tactical move. his location is still not known as we ve said. meantime, pockets of fighting remain, including at tripoli s airport. that s where cnn s arwa damon has been reporting. rebels took over the airport monday but it is still a target for loyalist troops. and international journalists are trapped in the rixos hotel in the libyan capital. the journalists including our own matthew chance, remain virtual prisoners being held by troops loyal to gadhafi. cnn s sara sidner was right in the middle of all the the chaos at that gadhafi compound. rebels invited her in as they swept through the complex. th ....

i m carol costello. the eastern seaboard bracing themselves for the worst of irene on this american morning. good morning, everyone. it is it s wednesday, wowp halfway through the week. august 24th. welcome to american morning. feels like it s halfway through the week. he had like a hundred years of news in two days. we started off yesterday with what was going on in libya, these hurricane preparations, and then an earthquake. right. did you feel it? christine and i were together working. i thought it was a little vertigo. i said, is that the subway? and we were with somebody who said the lights are swaying. yeah. this ligds grid was swaying. i did not feel it. i was in a shoe store buying shoes. you thought that s what it was. my husband is in baltimore, he really felt it. he e-mails me and says, get out of wherever you are. i m thinking, how does he know i m buying shoes. hopefully, gladly there are more stories of that sort. only something ....

thing. cnn newsroom continues right now with randi kaye. hi there, suzanne. thank you. well, three major stories on the radar this hour. starting with a major hurricane. category 3 irene batters the bahamas and eyes the carolinas. chad myers is watching that. a hostage ordeal is over in tripoli, but the fighting goes on, and moammar gadhafi still out of sight. and washington surveys the damage from the earthquake that shook the east coast almost 24 hours ago. i want to start with a huge and still growing hurricane irene. chad myers is watching it all for us. what s it doing now, chad? and exactly where might it be headed? well, it s headed to the bahamas. and right now, if you want to get a map, it s right over crooked island in the bahamas. and later on it ll be going over long island at the bahamas. the irony is that there s the potential, at least in the cone that in four days it could go over long island, new york. right now at 115 miles per hour forecast ....
