Rocket Lab pulled one of its boosters from the sea after a launch on Monday (July 17), taking another step toward rocket reuse.
Rocket Lab has made improvements to the first stage of the Electron rocket to make it more resilient to ocean water, upgrades that will be put to the test with tonight’s launch. The “Baby Come Back” mission will launch from the company’s launch complex on Māhia Peninsula, New Zealand, with a launch window that opens at 7:30 PM EST. The primary purpose of the mission is the delivery of four satellites for NASA, two weather intelligence satellites for Spire Global and a demonstrator sat for Canadian satellite communications company Telesat.
Rocket Lab’s next Electron mission will include another marine recovery attempt of the rocket's booster, the latest step by the company to advance its reusability program. The mission, called “Baby Come Back,” will take off from Rocket Lab’s Launch Complex 1 on New Zealand’s Mahia Peninsula. As part of the mission, the Electron rocket will carry several customer payloads to space, include a 4 CubeSat mission for NASA; two radio frequency satellites for Spire Global; and a demonstration satellite for Space Flight Laboratory.
