Cookies for Troops | Marshfield Mail

The Elkland Independent Methodist Church again baked and collected cookies for the troops at Fort Leonard Wood. Carol Larimore started the project in honor of her brothers and father, who were in the service. She explained to the church that she remembered when they would receive special items in the mail and how that would lift their spirits and make them remember everyone at home. With the project now in its second year, Congregation members brought their cookies to the church last week, and they were bagged, sorted, and then placed in boxes for delivery. A total of 64 boxes were filled with an estimated 2,000 cookies baked. The cookies were then delivered to Sarah Stewart in Lebanon and taken to the USO at Fort Leonard Wood. Church members assisting in the project were Larimore, Margo Delgado, Sunny Fuller, Dianna Witte, Butch Alcorn, Chuck Witte, Pastor Nicholas Inman, Sarah Inman, Reagan Inman, and Emmett Thiele. Last known widow of a Civil War soldier dies at 101

Helen Viola Jackson, the one-time spouse of elderly Union soldier who wished to leave her his pension, died last month at 101 as the last known Civil War widow, according to Sons of Union Veterans.
Jackson died Dec. 16. at the Webco Manor nursing home in Marshfield, Mo.
She was 17 when she married James Bolin, a 93-year-old who had served in the 14th Missouri Cavalry, according to the Missouri Cherry Blossom Festival, where she volunteered.
Bolin wanted to pass his pension on to Jackson after she volunteered to do chores for him, and they did not live together after they married in 1936, according to the festival. He died three years later, and she never collected his pension. ....

She had married Civil War veteran James Bolin in 1936, when he was 93
