Manawatū driving offenders get wins on appeal

He was arrested in July 2020 after police saw a vehicle speeding along Main St, Palmerston North.
Police found him walking away from the vehicle with the keys in his pocket, but he refused to undergo alcohol checks.
He was stopped while driving a ute, with two passengers, on October 11, giving a reading of 654 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
He had two previous convictions for drink-driving in 2017 and 2018.
While he could have been sentenced to community detention, the sentencing judge thought a more serious punishment was needed due to the seriousness of the offending.
In a decision released in June, High Court judge Justice Matthew Palmer said the sentence was excessive.

Man denies smuggling nearly 40g of methamphetamine into Manawatū Prison

Police found a range of items in his car, including weapons, drug paraphernalia, multiple cellphones and $5680 cash, before taking him to the Palmerston North police station.
They found 2.8g of meth in a bag in his top pocket when he was searched at the station.
He was taken to Manawatū Prison in a van with three others after a court appearance, where officers conducting a strip search found a 3g bag of meth.
He was placed in a cell on his own overnight, with nothing remarkable noticed until a prison officer smelt a burning chemical odour on Christmas morning.
The officer saw a plastic bag sticking out of Tregoweth’s underwear, leading to multiple officers holding down an incompliant Tregoweth while he was searched.
