The U.N. Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists was launched in 2012 to better protect the press and address impunity. Ten years later, it is obvious that not enough has been done. Journalists continue to be killed and impunity remains rampant.

A group against attacks on media practitioners in Nigeria, Media Rights Agenda (MRA) on Wednesday, called on governments at all levels to ensure total protection of journalists in the country against any harm.   The organisation charged President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to commence an immediate investigation into all attacks against media practitioners as well as prosecute the perpetrators to serve as a deterrent.  

By signing the ten undertakings and calling on colleagues to join them, the eight prosecutors are proclaiming their determination to preserve the independence and impartiality of their investigations, to protect journalists and to cooperate with their international counterparts.
