Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories raised its starting wages from $15.50 to $16 per hour on May 1. Leith Sorenson, SEL senior vice president of manufacturing, said when the starting wage went up, so did the wages for the other hourly employees. The United Way of Whitman County is now accepting grant applications from registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations until May 17. Organizations have to provide services in three specific areas: health, education and financial stability to qualify, said Christine Oakley, United Way of Whitman County vice president. COVID-19 vaccine appointments are filling up quickly as vaccine eligibility expanded April 15 to all individuals over 16 years old in Washington state. As of April 20, Whitman County has administered over 29,280 COVID-19 vaccination doses, according to the Washington State Department of Health’s COVID-19 data dashboard.
