Wind River Startup Challenge Pitch Day May 22 | News

Six finalists are set to pitch their businesses to a virtual audience and panel of judges during the Wind River Startup Challenge (WRSC) Saturday, May 22.
Pitch Day begins at 12:30 p.m., with presentations scheduled to start at 1 p.m. To view Pitch Day, the YouTube link will be available midday May 22 on the WRSC Facebook page at www.facebook.com/windriverstartupchallenge, as well as at www.windriverstartupchallenge.com.  
The WRSC is an opportunity for Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribal members to pitch their business ideas in hopes of securing a portion of the $30,000 available in startup capital. The WRSC is currently sponsored by Wyoming EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research), a program funded through the National Science Foundation, and is a collaboration among the Wind River community, Central Wyoming College, the Wyoming Small Business Development Center and the University of Wyoming’s IMPACT 3 ....

Welch involved in over $21.6M in robotics research

Dr. Karla Conn Welch is an Associate Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department at the University of Louisville (UofL). She is an active member of the Louisville Automation and Robotics Research Institute (LARRI). She is part of the team awarded an EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The $20 million grant is a joint project connecting several universities across the commonwealth. Dr. Dan Popa, also in ECE, leads UofL’s branch of the project through LARRI. The 5-year project is called KAMPERS (Kentucky Advanced Manufacturing Partnership for Enhanced Robotics and Structures) and will develop global excellence in next-generation flexible electronics, manufacturing technologies, and robotics.  ....

Eight Wind River Startup Challenge Finalists Announced | News

The Wind River Startup Challenge, a regional entrepreneurship opportunity designed to distribute thousands of dollars to Native-owned startups, received significantly more applications from Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone entrepreneurs this year. Eight finalist teams will advance to the Final Pitch Day, currently scheduled for May.
“We are encouraged to see the increase in applications and the wide variety of the business concepts this year for the Wind River Startup Challenge, even in the midst of COVID-19,” says David Bohling, the director of IMPACT 307, located at the University of Wyoming. “With help from Central Wyoming College (CWC) and the Wyoming Small Business Development Center (SBDC), we find it gratifying to assist these entrepreneurs in their efforts in trying to start or grow their businesses.” ....

Belle Fourche teacher embraces new career, new concepts

When Darin Newton graduated from the University of Montana with a master’s degree seven years ago, he fully expected to be working in his area of study: wildlife biology. When his wife, also a wildlife biologist, took a job in the Belle Fourche area, Newton began working as a kindergarten assistant and substitute teacher in the Belle Fourche school district. It was a temporary thing, meant to last only until he found a job in his field. But then something completely unexpected happened.
“I really enjoyed being around the kids,” Newton said. “And then the next two years I moved up in the different grade levels and found that I really enjoyed being in the classroom. I really enjoyed interacting with the students. And that got me thinking, ‘maybe this is something I could get into.’” ....
