Landlords in Alachua County will no longer be able to discriminate against people who rely on rental assistance from the government through housing vouchers, officials said.
County leaders have been playing a cat-and-mouse game of legislative changes to keep up with landlords who find ways to avoid accepting the Section 8 vouchers, which are housing subsidies.
This week, they approved amendments to the county s anti-discrimination housing ordinance that take effect Sept. 1.
Despite laws that say landlords may not summarily reject those using the subsidies to pay rent, renters hoping to use them say they are frequently thwarted by apartment complexes who simply refuse to accept them.  ....
