The Brood X Cicadas Are Emerging on the East Coast. What Are They Telling Us?

Listen Closely to the Cicadas. They’re Telling Us Something. Periodical cicadas were born out of crisis. Now we’ve created a crisis they may not survive. Illustration by Valerie Chiang They went to ground as John Kerry was “reporting for duty” at the Democratic National Convention, deftly avoiding the release of Princess Diaries 2 a few weeks later. They’ve missed the launch of Twitter, the birth of the gig economy, and Brexit. The cicadas are highly vulnerable during time (it usually takes 30 minutes to an hour), and should be avoided to make sure they survive the process. Be a bug tracker Under optimal conditions, there may be as many as 1.5 million cicadas on a single acre of land. How co...

Deseret News Don’t forget — the Brood X cicadas are set to hit the United States soon Share this story Keith Srakocic, Associated Press The Brood X — a group of cicadas that emerge every 17 years — is set to arrive in the United States in the near future, according to CNN. As I wrote for the Deseret News, Brood X, or the Great Eastern Brood, is coming back this year, sending billions of cicadas across the country — primarily in the Eastern part of the country. Cicadas — “large, winged, kind of scary-looking but mostly harmless flying insects,” according to USA Today — are k...
