Before Kayda Tovi opens the front door of Botan Market, she traces her hand under a poster on the front door advertising kunafa, a Middle Eastern sweet made with shredded pastry. That’s how far up the water came, she explains, when the family business flooded in March of this year.
That was the second time the market has flooded in its location at the corner of Nolensville and Edmondson pikes — the first time was during Nashville’s historic 2010 flood. ....

The steeple from The Church at Lockeland Springs in East Nashville was sitting on the ground near the church for nearly a year, one of many reminders of the March 3 tornado’s destruction. But a couple weeks ago, a crane lifted the steeple back up to its perch. And several weeks before that, the rehabbed neon sign at Weiss Liquors ripped from its longtime home by the tornado’s deadly winds lit up Main Street again. The steeple and the sign reach toward the sky over two different but historic establishments the church was built in the early 1900s, and the liquor store has been in its East Nashville location since the mid-’60s. They’re beacons of “normal” in a neighborhood ravaged by the storm almost a full year ago. ....

Sorry, good ol’ boys, but it’s time to stop laughing at vegans. A plant-based diet is no longer the tree-hugging, granola-crunching butt of the joke. Veganism is a lifestyle embraced by millions lifestyle website WTVOX estimates that there are roughly 78 million vegans worldwide and numbers are on the rise.
According to The Vegan Society, “retail sales of plant-based meat grew 31 percent, while total U.S. retail meat sales grew just 5 percent” between 2017 and 2019, and in recent years the “consumption of plant milk increased by 61 percent while consumption of cow’s milk decreased by 22 percent.” ....
