"Ask anyone who lives on West Maui, either full time or, like my wife and I for the last decade, part of the year, and they’ll say the big storms – the hurricanes and tropical storms – will almost always weaken, first by spending energy on the Big Island, then by being intercepted by Haleakala volcano and the West Maui mountains," writes Sentinel Opinion Editor Don Miller. "The big storms then drift toward the island of Moloka’i, leaving the popular destinations of Kapalua, Napilii and Kaanapali relatively unscathed."
