SOUTH BEND â The initial rollout of Indianaâs new vital records system this month has led to long delays for some families seeking death certificates for deceased loved ones, though some local funeral directors say the process has improved in recent days. Soon after the state switched to the new system, called DRIVE, on Jan. 4, funeral homes began to see a backlog in death certificates. At one point, McGann Hay funeral homes were waiting for about two dozen pending death certificates, co-owner Patrick McGann said. Thatâs a burden for families because a certified copy of a death certificate is required not only to cremate a body, but also to collect life insurance money, open an estate, pay a deceased personâs bills and access a non-spousal bank account. ....
