Keeping fires from happening requires close attention to power lines and the areas around them, and that’s not just a summer job.

“Fire season is a condition that can exist at any time of year,” wrote JoDee Black of NorthWestern Energy, based in Missoula, Montana via email. “Each year’s weather conditions impact those situations differently: Early season rains encourage plant growth which fuels fires later in the growing season, and winters with little snow leave dry plant material available for late season fires.” . ....

SPOKANE The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission will investigate how utility companies prepared and responded amid record-setting heat statewide last week that led to all-time usage highs and planned outages for some of them.
As part of the investigation, the commission will look into utility infrastructure and customer communications related to the heat wave, which saw record-high temperatures across much of Eastern Washington, said Emilie Brown, a commission spokesperson. The results of the investigation, which will likely take six to 18 months, will be posted publicly with gathered documentation. ....

Windstorm Downs Trees, Interrupts Power All Over Region

Utility crews are working overtime in eastern Washington and northern Idaho, picking up the pieces from Wednesday’s windstorm.
High winds knocked down trees and power lines from the Canadian border down to the Palouse.
In north Idaho, Erika Neff from Kootenai Electric Cooperative says, in the early evening, crews were trying to bring back power for more than 15,000 customers from nearly 50 outages.
“We have 11 crews working right now and we’re calling in more contact crews. As they assess damage, we are asking our members to be prepared for outages that last throughout the night and possibly to multiple days, she said. It’s really widespread throughout our system and we serve up from about Athol all the way down to the Worley area. So, throughout Kootenai County we’re seeing outages, she said. ....
