Mobile food vendors on Evanston beaches under consideration

After discussion with the Evanston Health and Human Services Department last night, City Council will vote in two weeks on whether to begin allowing mobile food vendors at city parks and beaches.
Currently, food trucks and other food vendors cannot operate within 100 feet of city vehicles unless given explicit permission by the city to do so. Past exceptions have primarily taken place during special lakefront events, including the Starlight Concert and Food Truck festival at Brummel Park.
If the new ordinance passes, one pushcart from Wandering Cafe and two food trucks would be on the Evanston shoreline for the remainder of this summer. According to Ike Ogbo, director of health and human services, these are the only mobile food vendors currently licensed in Evanston.

The meeting began at 4:38 p.m.
A packet with information on tonight’s agenda items is available online.

Mayor issues a proclamation for Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Mayor issues keys to the city (on prerecorded video) to Evanston Own It, Friends of Robert Crown Center, the Evanston Health and Human Services Department, and to former Alderman Jane Grover and Judge (and former alderman) Lionel Jean-Baptiste.

Daniel Biss.
Incoming Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss announced this afternoon that he’s appointing a 17-member Reimagining Public Safety Committee.
Biss says the committee “will conduct a holistic, data-driven analysis of everything we do to provide for public safety and make community-informed recommendations in time to be incorporated into the 2022 City budget.”
He says the committee members “bring a broad variety of perspectives and experiences, and while I have no illusions that it will be easy (or necessary!) to establish a consensus on all issues, I’m confident that we’ll have significant and constructive discussions that will move our City forward.”

EVANSTON, IL — A schedule of special events in Evanston this summer was approved by the Evanston City Council Monday. The list (see below) include traditional favorites like the Starlight Concert Series Movies in the Park and Bike the Ridge, as well as two new events organizers hope to debut this year.
But approval of some of the summer events — like Northwestern University's commencement address, a concert series at Canal Shores and plans for food fests, charity walks and outdoor markets — was conditional on changes to state rules issued in response to coronavirus pandemic.

Evanston residents have difficulty securing vaccination appointments

When Chris Granner, 63, became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, he jumped on the opportunity to register through the city of Evanston’s website — but soon realized he was not going to find an appointment in Evanston, or at least not quickly.
After hearing Mayor Steve Hagerty’s recommendation to find vaccines elsewhere due to an insufficient allotment from the state, Granner tasked his daughter with finding him an appointment. She found an open slot in Quincy, Illinois — nearly a five hour drive from home.
“When she asked me, ‘Should I book the appointment for you?’ I considered for about five seconds, and said yes,” said Granner, who qualifies as part of the state’s 1B+ priority group.
